About Michael Krapes

As a painter with deep roots in both studio art and clinical psychology, I use the canvas to visually articulate the weight and beauty of human experience. My work is fueled by decades of teaching and clinical practice, blending intuitive emotional responses with vibrant expression. Each piece operates as a psychological landscape, capturing the unspoken narratives of our inner lives. Through color and texture, I seek to give form to complex emotions, inviting viewers to connect with their own psychological depths.

Background

My paintings are a direct dialogue between my background in studio art and my life's work in clinical psychology. Having spent over three decades teaching both disciplines and working closely with the internal lives of children, I look at the canvas through a unique lens of empathy and human development. My creative process is deeply intuitive; I rely on spontaneous emotional responses and vivid expression to translate intangible feelings into visual form. I do not just paint what I see—I paint the profound, layered experience of being human, bridging the gap between clinical insight and artistic expression.

Work

Curiosity, reflection, exploration, and discovery through creation.

Each piece reflects a journey of exploration and articulation of experiences and interactions.

Creative Process

The work is a "conversation" including whatever I can access; images, symbols, color, textures, language, patterns. To explore an experience and its layers of meaning for myself.
